Pros and Cons of a Natural Gas Stove

When picking out the perfect appliances for your home, I’m sure you’ve run into the dilemma of which kind of stove to choose;  a natural gas stove or electric. Both have their benefits, but we’ve laid out the pros and cons of choosing a gas stove for your home.

Pro: A natural gas stove works during power outages

If you live in an area with frequent power outages, you may want to consider installing gas appliances. Gas stoves still work even when the power to your home is out, so you would not have to worry about how you would cook food during a power outage.

Pro: Less expensive to operate

The gas required to operate a natural gas stove is significantly cheaper than the energy needed to run an electric stove. Electric stoves use approximately three times the energy that gas stoves use.

Gas stoves will save you money on the operation front in the long run.

Pro: Easier to cook with

Pans tend to get hotter faster with a natural gas stove, and the heat is distributed to allow food to cook more quickly.

Natural gas stoves also allow you to change the temperature distribution to the pan much faster than electric stoves do. This means you get better control of the food you are cooking!

Con: A natural gas stove can be more dangerous to operate

Gas stoves work with open flames and have an increased risk for gas leaks. However, the potential for gas leaks dramatically decreases with the safe and proper gas line of all your appliances.

With gas stoves, it’s also essential to make sure the gas is completely turned off to your burners when not in use to gas does not continue to release into the air.

Con: More expensive to buy and install

Gas stoves are a more considerable investment from the get-go. So you have to consider where you want to save money, on the appliance itself or the appliance's operation.

Con: Worse for the environment

Because natural gas stoves release methane into the air, they are significantly worse for the environment than electric stoves. However, with the effort to reduce our carbon footprint globally, more cities are trying to reduce the number of gas appliances in homes.

However, if your home already has hookups for gas appliances, it may be cheaper and easier to keep gas appliances than to hook up electric ones.

The kind of stove you install is simply up to personal preference when it comes down to it.

Once you find the perfect natural gas stove for your home, call High Speed Plumbing to ensure the installation goes off with a hitch!
